What’s the evidence?
The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) and
independent research organizations have
presented evidence that questions effectiveness
and safety of six of 12 top-selling products in
the herbal-supplement market. At the same time,
herbal-supplement manufacturers maintain that
previous studies contradict the growing negative
research. They also continue to finance research
aimed at finding results that will yield
positive findings. Following are the six
herbal-supplements that are being questioned:
SUPPLEMENT COMMON USE PROBLEM
The biggest controversy surrounding the
discrepancies in the different research to
support one study versus another is that
manufacturers tend to use research done by
reputable scientists in Germany and elsewhere in
Europe (where herbal-supplement have been sold
for decades). U.S.-based researchers contend
that those studies would never be presented to
the rigorous process used by the FDA. In
addition, much of the research that
substantiates herbal-supplements' beneficial or
medicinal benefits are paid by the big players
in what is now a $4.2 billion market.
But now that the herbal-supplements are no
longer sold simply by mom-and-pop stores, the
National Institutes of Health, other federal
agencies and the medical establishment are
demanding research that meets FDA guidelines.
This is clearly in the best interest of the
herbal-supplement user.
