Dare To Be Happy!
Here are some highlights of Dr. Alfred D.
Herger’s inspiring messages:
Dare to be happy. Virginia Satir, the famous
writer and psychotherapist who wrote “Making
Contact” (En Contacto Intimo), a best selling
manual on communication, taught that the most
powerful weapon that we posses is faith.
Specially faith in oneself, and that things will
move forward in a positive way. She said that
the key to happiness comes from that hope, from
that self-confidence.
She emphasized a great phrase: “Don’t be
embarrassed from feeling happy.” If you feel
love, don’t hide it - Yes. Dare to be happy. To
succeed!
Getting the most from experiences
Research by Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmohalyi,
Professor of Psychology at the University of
Chicago, on the search for and enjoyment of
happiness emphasizes how one can get the most
out of life’s experiences. His ideas are very
relevant for today’s hectic lifestyles; it’s
worth revisiting them in light of new studies.
Here is a sampler:
Set short term goals for yourself.
It helps us structure time so that we can use
it to the max. It is also important to check
review the goals on a daily basis.
Set long term goals.
This is more accessible as we daily reach the
short-term goals. But we must always have a
clear vision of what we want to achieve.
Learn constantly.
Look for new and interesting things, keep your
curiosity alive and involved and find good
rewards. Our desire to live grows because we
awaken our internal “child” – discovering new
things.
Make new friends.
The experience of living is enriched, for new
people bring use new worlds filled with
mystery, surprises, learnings and happiness.
Many times we hold ourselves back from taking
the first step. Let’s take the initiative by
inviting someone new into our lives! Let’s
start a conversation! Let’s discover new
worlds!
Enjoy the work we do.
Dr. Caikszentimihalyi found in his research
what he called the “work paradox.”: the fact
that an incredible 54% of the time that we
spend working we are extremely alert and
stimulated, but only in 16% of the time we are
bored – the remainder 30% fluctuates back and
forth between stimulation and alertness and
boredom. Yet, many do not know how to enjoy
work.
Rituals
Start working days or at home activities with
some type of ritual: meditation, yoga,
organizing your desk for work or creative
activities, taking care of your correspondence,
writing the day’s objectives, to name a few.
These kind of activities help us focus, clear
the mind and prepare for action.
Memorizing
Exercise your mind by memorizing poems, songs,
phone numbers, meetings and personal dates,
formulas, cooking recipes – to bring order to
typical mental chaos. This also enhances the
feeling that you are achieving your goals and is
a practical way to add to your resources.
Read
Reading adds a different dimension to listening
to radio or watching television. Following the
plot, imagining characters, acquiring relevant
information, knowing useful information,
checking out new data or simply enjoying the
taste of a classical or new approach to language
– all of this exercises and revives your brain
power.
Exercise
Routine activities that require concentration
and little equipment, such as: walking with the
intent to watch: people, birds, or just the
scenery; swimming and bicycling regularly;
dancing traditional or modern steps with someone
you care for; doing Tai Chi or other martial
arts, yoga or Pilates or both. Whatever form of
exercise you choose will provide you with high
dividends, physically, mentally and spiritually.
Solitude
Setting aside a little time to be alone doing
something that’s pleasant, learning a hobby such
as playing a musical instrument, or taking care
of a home garden or simply tending to flowers
and plants, doing arts and crafts, visiting
museums and galleries, going window-shopping –
anything that will help you dream awake.
Visualize future plans, recall happy moments.
These tranquil and non-aggressive activities go
a long way in relaxing us physically and
psychologically.
Face adversity as you would a challenge; put
more variety in your routine; don’t be afraid to
compete with others; keep a record or diary of
people, events and memorable happenings – all
can ultimately result in a new you. These are
just a few of the many little things that you
can be doing to bring big changes in your life.
Many times the theme or ideal that you are
looking for will come out of your difficulties,
or from your family, tradition and culture; or
intellectual, religious, political concerns.
The restlessness in you may come from the desire
and anxiety that results from a constant battle
to succeed, to care for others, to arrive at a
personal philosophy – learned or imagined. These
are but a few of the many hard to identify and
manage pressures and concerns that impact you.
