Who is the NAHN?
Mission
and Purpose
Promoting Hispanic nurses to improve the health
of our communities.
Philosophy
NAHN strives to serve the nursing and health
care delivery needs of the Hispanic community
and the professional needs of Hispanic nurses.
NAHN is designed and committed to work toward
improvement of the quality of health and nursing
care for Hispanic consumers and toward providing
equal access to educational, professional, and
economic opportunities for Hispanic nurses.
NAHN’s Vision Statement
-
We are the voice for Hispanic nurses and
Hispanic health in our community.
-
The membership provides the greatness and
direction of our organization.
-
The contribution of our members and chapters
are valued, recognized and supported.
-
We are committed to the recruitment and
retention of Hispanics into nursing and the
professional development of Hispanic nurses.
-
We value, provide and promote culturally
competent models in health care, professional
education and research.
-
We are committed to equality and justice for
all Hispanic nurses for the communities they
serve.
-
We are exemplars of Hispanic leadership.
What is the NAHN doing to help Hispanics in the
field of nursing or who want to enter that
field?
The National Association of Hispanic Nurses and
its chapters around the
USA
are dedicated to promoting and enhancing
education of all Hispanic nurses. To that end,
the NAHN has created a program entitled “Nurses
Helping Nurses” whose mission is to help
educated foreign-trained nurses in their quest
for their U.S Registered Nurse (RN) license.
The NAHN understand that Hispanic Nurses are
underrepresented in the nursing field?
The ranks of Hispanic nurses remain
disproportionately small compared to growth in
the Hispanic population. According to the Bureau
of Health Professionals, Hispanics comprise an
estimated 13 percent of the
U.S.
population, but less than 2 percent of the
country’s registered nurses are of Hispanic
origin.
The Hispanic population in the
U.S.
is growing much faster than the
U.S.
population as a whole. By the year 2050,
Hispanics are projected to compose at least 22%
of the
U.S.
population becoming the nation’s largest
minority group.
What is The NAHN doing to remedy this situation?
The NAHN is coordination and its chapters are
contacting the media to drum up support and
coverage for their mission: to represent
Hispanic nurses. The NAHN hopes you that the
media (TV, Cable, Radio, Print, New Media) will
join them in disseminating information regarding
the nursing shortage in general, but especially
the shortage of Hispanic nurses.
Through a series of “Open Houses” the NAHN –
with participating chapters - is welcoming new
and old members of NAHN (U.S. licensed Nurses)
to join the sessions to find out a) what NAHN is
all about and b) how the association can help
Hispanics, our high schools and our community.
Another “Open House” session will provide
information to educated foreign-trained nurses
on the process necessary to get their nursing
license in the U.S.
